Communication Officer

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Contributes to defining communication objectives, strategies and plans of action for the geographic area or programme covered, in line with the field sub-structure's priorities and/or the delegation’s communication strategy.
  • With minimum supervision, implements relevant activities and develops tools for: community engagement, operational communication, interaction with stakeholders, promoting International Humanitarian Law (IHL), public and digital communication, information analysis/environment scanning, building National Red Crescent Society communication capacity.
  • Supports the Head of Sub-Structure and/or Communication Manager in networking with relevant stakeholders and represents the organization to various audiences.
  • Integrates Community Engagement approach and activities into program plans and operations; ensures communities are consulted, feedback is regularly collected, and programs adapted accordingly; raises awareness internally on the importance of CE, and delivers CE training to staff
  • Supports the collection of communication material, such as photos, videos, stories, interviews
  • Follows and analyses political, security, military and humanitarian developments relevant to the organization's reputation/perception and capacity to operate in the covered geographic area.
  • Identifies training needs of the relevant departments in communication skills, operational communication and community engagement, and supports such training and coaching.
  • Interprets and translates from and into the local language when required.
  • Ensure availability in the Sud-delegation of the necessary dissemination materials and ensures their supply
  • Provides technical and administrative support to the communication team (e.g. filing, stock management, event organization) when required.

Desired Profile and Skills

  • University degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as communications, political science, international relations, journalism, or similar.
  • At least 3 year’s work experience in a field relevant to communications; NGO experience an asset
  • Fluent in written and spoken English; Russian is an asset
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Very good analytical and writing skills
  • Capacity to analyze the political and social environment
  • Computer skills (proficiency in MS Office); familiarity with digital communication tools, IHL knowledge is an asset
  • Good knowledge of the political, social and media environment in the sub-region
